This morning, we woke up and explored our troll campsite in the daylight and then made our way back south. That means… we officially finished the loop!

Along the way, we made a little detour for something we absolutely love: sea glass. In case you’ve never heard of it, sea glass is broken glass that’s been naturally smoothed and frosted by the ocean over decades. It starts as trash, but ends up as little gems scattered across beaches.

Usually, we’re thrilled to find just one or two colorful pieces during a beach walk. But this time, we had read about a remote beach where people had found a lot of sea glass before. Since it was on our route, we decided to stop and check it out.

And wow, it was like Christmas morning. Every step we took, there was another piece! We spent nearly two hours combing the beach until our backs couldn’t take it anymore. When we finally weighed our haul, we had collected 14 pounds of sea glass!

Yes, we know it’s technically ocean trash… but it’s beautiful ocean trash.

We couldn’t stop wondering why there was so much sea glass in this one spot. So we did a little digging and found out there used to be a large U.S. Naval base in the bay during World War II. Turns out, all that discarded glass has been tumbling in the ocean for over 80 years, just waiting to be discovered.

Now we are settled in at Skogafoss campgrounds where we are camping right next to a roaring waterfall ready to take on Vestmannaeyjabær island tomorrow!
